{"id":1517,"date":"2021-02-08T20:45:18","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T20:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/farrellgrp.com\/homepage\/?p=1517"},"modified":"2021-02-08T20:45:18","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T20:45:18","slug":"zoomed-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/farrellgrp.com\/homepage\/?p=1517","title":{"rendered":"Zoomed Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cZoom fatigue\u201d is real.<\/p>\n<p>In April of 2020, I began noticing a slew of articles that described the negative impact of videoconferencing.\u00a0 In addition to exhaustion, many people were experiencing weight gain, eye strain, sleeplessness, isolation, and several other maladies.<\/p>\n<p>While the benefits of videoconferencing are many, especially in the COVID world, the costs of all that time we spend on screens with each other is probably a lot higher than we think.<\/p>\n<p>A recent Robert Half study indicated that approximately 40% of workers have experienced some video fatigue since the start of the pandemic.\u00a0 It is not surprising that a quarter of those in this study said that they prefer email or phone calls to videoconferencing.<\/p>\n<p>Zoom, Skype, Team and other types of virtual video meeting platforms force our brains to process much more information.\u00a0 We must read body language, listen to verbal cues, sort different backgrounds, look people in the eye, and be cognizant of our appearance.\u00a0 Not to mention technical issues\u2026. frozen screens, slight delays, poor Wi-Fi, and system crashes.\u00a0 Yikes!!<\/p>\n<p>How can you reduce fatigue?\u00a0 Here are some suggestions from the experts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Replace as many video calls as possible with emails, texts, and\/or phone calls.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of calls with large numbers of people, set up smaller group or one on one conversations.<\/li>\n<li>Double check your technology \u2013 and have back up plans in place.<\/li>\n<li>Schedule mindful breaks between video calls \u2013 stretch, walk, or just meditate in the moment.<\/li>\n<li>Aim for shorter calls with tight agendas. Meetings do not have to last for an hour!<\/li>\n<li>Engage all five senses. Look for ways to smell, to touch, and to taste.<\/li>\n<li>Eliminate <em>your <\/em>picture from the screen. <em>You<\/em> can be a distraction too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One last thing &#8211; create space between work and home.\u00a0 Save some energy for the things and people you enjoy in life.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, that might even include a Zoom call to family or to a friend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Photo: Andrea Piacquadio, Pexels<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cZoom fatigue\u201d is real.
